Vietnamese Cultural Village

The Vietnamese cultural village is one of the highlights of the Tet Festival. Our staff has transformed Garden Grove park to a Vietnamese village complete with a house, farm animals, historical landmarks and more.

Since the theme of Làng Việt Nam this year is “Colors of Our Homeland”, the village gate features the three main regions of Việt Nam (North, Central, and South). On the top of the gate entrance, there are three paintings representing these regions. The North is represented by Hạ Long Bay and cherry blossoms. The Central region is represented by the Ngự Bình Mountain and the Hương River in the city of Huế, which used to be the capital of Việt Nam.

The South is represented by certain characteristics of the Gia Định Citadel. One is the mausoleum which commemorates General Lê Văn Duyệt. Outside of it, people can see Ông Đồ (a typical village scholar) and the Bà Chiểu market. There are also some tra- ditional items related to the Tết celebration such as strings of firecrackers, Cây Nêu (New Year Bamboo Pole), and the Lion Dance Team. Horse-drawn car- riages (a popular method of transportation in the past), thatched cottages, and the Saigon River with Nghé Port (Bến Nghé) can be seen in the distance. This idyllic picture features the time when people began to develop the region.

The gate features three arches along with flowers decorating the gate pillars, which serve to add to its visual appeal. As a whole, the gate reminds us of a golden time in our past and truly evokes an image of the “Colors of Our Homeland.”

Phan Bội Châu Youth for Democracy has been organizing the building of the Cultural Village in the Tet Festival since 2002. This year, we had the privilege of working together with the following organizations:

Fireworks Show

Lion Dancing

The tradition of lion dance has been part of Vietnamese culture for thousands of years. It is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring luck to whoever the lions are dancing for.
In most lion dance performances, the lions will eat lettuce and a tangerine. The spread of good luck and fortune is represented by the lions spitting the leaves of the lettuce. By eating the tangerine and spitting out the peel, the lions spread happiness and longevity among the audience.

Lion Dancing will be displayed throughout the festival but mainly highlighted during our opening ceremony Saturday Feb 9th at 12pm.

Fire Crackers

One of the most exciting elements in the celebration of our Tet Festival is the lighting of fire crackers. These explosions are believed to drive off ghosts and evil spirits and leave good luck in the new year. As thousands come and see our opening ceremony, the level of volume and excitement rises to a fury. You won’t want to miss us bring in the new year with a BANG!

Children from the ages of 3 and 9 will be on stage in their traditional attireand perform a talent which they will show to the audience and the judges. All children are awarded with prizes and gifts for their participation.

Talent Search Competition

UVSA will be hosting a talent search competition for the Tet Festival of 2013. This competition is open to all types of talent from individual to group performances, dances teams to magic acts.

Participants must go through live auditions or send in a demo before the deadline. The top talents will be chosen to compete in the final competition, live in front of thousands of audience members. All participants must meet the criteria of the terms & conditions of the competition.

There will be professional judges to evaluate the performances. There will be 5 prizes awarded totaling over $2000, including gifts.

Unity Award: $250 – Best Group
Star Award: $250 – Best Individual
Spirit Award: $250 – Best Traditional Act
